LIVER OF SULFER/Jewelry Care

Most of our dark or black patinas are achieved using Liver of Sulfur. This substance works best at low concentrations and heated slightly. We immerse copper, silver or brass into this solution and allow the metal to react chemically oxidizing the surface. This is a very similar process to the natural tarnishing of silver/copper/brass but sped up. slight variations in patinas are natural and should be expected.

While creating an interesting surface which adds color and dimension to our jewelry pieces, the darkened areas may fade and even more quickly if jewelry is in contact with skin (like the inside of a ring.) We use a sealant which will protect this from happening and strongly advise the owner to never use commercial “dip” jewelry cleaners and to take jewelry off before exercising, swimming or bathing. To brighten up your piece of jewelry we suggest mild soap and water and a soft cloth.

HIDO (JAPANESE HEAT PATINA)/Jewelry Care

Hido is a heat treatment on copper which creates varying shades of pinks to reds. It is accomplished by heating the metal almost to a melting point then immersing it into a saturated solution of water and Borax. A glassy coating is also achieved making this patina quite durable. However, it does have its limitations and we strongly suggest the jewelry owner never use commercial “dip” jewelry cleaners and to take jewelry off before exercising, swimming or bathing. To brighten up your piece of jewelry we suggest mild soap and water and a soft cloth.
